Related: Toad in a Hole and Birds in a Nest: What are your Favorite Food Names?
(Images: Leela Cyd Ross, photo of Joy by Bonnie Tsang)Love this idea!
I can never seem to get it to turn out right because the egg wants to stick to the pan more than the bread when I go to flip it. Even when I use a non-stick pan, and/or butter the hole before dropping the egg in.
Tips?
I use to do this as a teen and thought that I had invented something no one had done before. I called them owl eyes.
Eggs in a basket is one of my wife's favorites for Sunday brunch! I usually use a slightly thicker slice of French bread--the crunchy outsides, soft bread, and creamy egg is fantastic.
@Mrs. Mack - Try lowering your heat a little and use a nice dollop of butter in the egg...hole. And maybe just practice a little more, no one would complain at having this for breakfast each day :)
I'm glad I'm not the only one who is anal enough to use a perfectly circular biscuit cutter & use the circle to sop up all the delicious egg.
I always called it "Toad in the hole" hehe
I have never heard this called "egg in a basket" before - I've always known it as either "German toast" or "hobo eggs". No matter what you call it, it's delicious!
I had these all the time as a kid, we called them "one-eyes pirates" not really sure why...
I had it for breakfast this morning, yum, thanks for the suggestion!
Mrs Mack - maybe make a smaller hole in the bread or use a bigger egg? It should be pretty full.. almost spilling or even spilling over. I have no qualms upping the egg to bread ratio lol. <3 eggs!!
Love this Joy! Literally made it this past weekend, so easy and tasty! The avocados are a great addition. :)
Hehe, my mom used to make these for us. We called them UFOs (unidentified frying objects... lol).
This is delicious with olive bread.
We make smaller holes and serve them egg side down, so it almost just looks like plain toast. Hence their name in our house - Egg Surprise! I often season with curry, cumin or a healthy dose of freshly ground pepper.
My mom called them Egyptian One Eyes. Not sure why, but I'm not changing the name!
My mother always called it egg in a hole in toast, as she has very little imagination.
Toad in the hole, @drewparadise, is a specific English dish with sausages in batter.
@Mrs.Mack - when I make them, I only butter one side of the bread. I cut the middle part out with a drinking glass while I let a little butter melt on the griddle. Then I place the bread, un-buttered side down, on it.
I crack the egg in the middle and let it cook for a bit. Then I flip it so the buttered side is down. This way, both sides get buttered, it's less messy, and the egg doesn't stick. =)
Oh these are scrumptious! It was introduced to me through a friend from Germany and she called them eggs in a frame. Funny how they have such different names!
I still love this - we call it Eggs in a Window...
I'm so glad to see this featured! This is my absolute FAVORITE breakfast. My husband, unfortunately, hates it. Don't know why. He likes eggs, he likes toast, but doesn't like them combined. Go figure. So whenever I'm on my own for dinner, this is what I eat. I have fond memories of my grandma making this for me when I spent the night at her house as a kid. We always called it an egg-in-a-frame. Mmmm... I wish I could have this for dinner tonight!
I have been making this for years and I think I may have perfected it ;o ) I lightly butter or margarine BOTH sides of the bread. Then I make the hole in the bread just large enough for the yolk. I drop the slice of bread onto a non-stick pan (or bacon drippings) crack the egg and aim for the hole! When the egg white solidifies, I flip and then cook until desired. Hope this helps!
The piece of bread looks a lot like Dave's Killer Bread 21 grain. If it's not, it should be because it's AWESOME!!!
oh, i would love this with olive bread like 'Alyce' has commented. my mom used to make this, she is British and grew up eating this take on the magical egg. and yes, that must be Dave's Killer bread!
Hmmm... I seem to be following/have tried at some point all the advice here, except possibly I need to make the hole smaller. I'll try that next time.
@LittleMissy, my husband isn't a big fan either, though he likes both eggs and toast. Weird, huh?
that is an eggy in a basket.
My husband and I saw V for Venetta for our first date, and this was made in the movie. We didnt' know what it was called so we called it "Eggy Bread". We've been married for 5 years now and I still make it for him.
